-It takes someone incredibly special to be a CNA, or a Nurse, I'm not that person. I am a compassionate person and I do care for people and their needs but I am very comfortable having a counter between me and the patients. Maybe it scares me to have them depend on me? I have favorite customers and I definitely bend over backwards for my fair share, don't get me wrong. However, I very rarely worry about those I deal with after I go home. 98% of the time I can go home and leave my work behind.
My Mom has a love for her hospice patients that I can't explain. You can see it in her eyes and hear it in her voice. She loves her job and her patients love her. She's the kind of Nurse that you would want taking care of you or your loved ones, she really is amazing.
I chose Pharmacy Tech as my profession for a lot of reasons. Sadly one of those reasons was for the counter that sits between us. Any sort of germs or bodily function can and most likely will, make me dry-heave. It's an awful sound and it can't be held back.
Today we had almost all of these things. A pt was being rang by one of our Pharmacists and then taken behind "The Curtain" {or a portable wall} for a flu shot. While at the Register she coughed and coughed and COUGHED. I seriously thought she was dying it was one of those coughs. So, I pulled out the Alcohol and paper towels and waited for her to leave. She insisted on asking a lot of questions and then randomly decided she was finished.
I proceeded with gloves, lots of alcohol, and lots of paper towels. My disinfecting mission was on. I walked behind the flu shot area and it started, the dry heaving. Was it the smell? Was it the thought of catching the cough? Or was it the puddle of urine sitting on the chair that made me want to vomit? Not sure. There was however, no turning back. I cleaned, cleaned, cleaned, cleaned, cleaned, complained about my pay, cleaned, cleaned, cleaned, and cleaned. I was so impressed with my ability to survive this, that I bought myself lunch.
Later the Pharmacy was discussing this particular incident and soon all the pieces started coming together. She very well could have coughed so hard she wet herself, maybe the flu shot scared her? Or Maybe, she was just comfortable and that would be the reason she continued to ask lots of unrelated questions before leaving in a hurry. Either way, this was soo not in my job description.
I give serious props to those in the hands on Medical field,
you are some special people and to you I say Congrats.
You're one of a kind.
I'll continue counting my pills and keeping the counter between us.
