On your Mexican vacation, be sure to check out some Mexican art! Mexico, especially Mexico City, offers great museum exhibits of true Mexican art, like the Diego Rivera Mural Museum and the Mexican Museum of Modern Art. If you want to check out some Mexican art before your vacation, there are some great Mexican Art Museums in the United States such as the National Museum of Mexican art in Chicago.
Before you go, familiarize yourself with some Mexican artists, so you know what to look out for in the Museums. Mexico’s two most famous artists are Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo.
Diego Rivera
Diego Rivera is one of Mexico’s most famous muralists and painters. Diego married another famous Mexican artist named Frida Kahlo, 20 years younger than him. His marriage to Frida was probably more famous than his actual art work. They had a tempestuous relationship filled with infidelity, divorce and remarriage. Diego studied art in Mexico, and then headed to Europe where he took up the style of Cubism. His works generally reflect his communist politics.
Frida Kahlo
Frida Kahlo is probably Mexico’s most famous female artist. She had survived Polio, and at the age of 18 was in a bus accident that fractured her spine and Pelvis, among many other injuries. As a result of the accident she had over 30 surgical operations in her life time. Frida was married to Diego Rivera when she was 22. Her original intent was to be a doctor, but while she was in bed after operations, she began producing art and made over 200 paintings and drawings, 55 of which were self portraits.
