Colby and I do our grocery shopping on Mondays. It gets it out of the way and it lets us prepare meals and lunches by the week. This last Monday was no different. We went through our list, picked up the usual [the items we have yet to get sick of] This time though, when we got to the frozen food section (lunches) I nearly broke down in tears and lost it. I refused to eat the frozen lunches that are already put together. I almost had Colb convinced to let me starve.
I ended up leaving with some syrup and a bog of eggos.
That's right, waffles for lunch fr an entire week.
I love being a grown up. :)

Every Big Baby Comment Makes Me Like Him Less

So, a week or two ago we got comments from Big Baby that he was looking for a bigger role, and that most likely was going to lead him out of Boston. We all laughed considering that he was one of the main reasons the Celtics tanked out of the playoffs. Now he is coming back sounding a little different.
"Man, I do," Davis tells the Boston Herald. "Do you know how much I've grown and learned with those guys? I want to keep playing with Ray Allen and Paul Pierce until they leave."
Davis has also hired a sports psychologist to help him understand what went wrong this past season.
"I was in that zone, and then it started to go downwards," Davis said."I want to use that positive energy I have as a player. I want to be the Glen Davis I know I can be."
Dude, you started to suck because you gained 20 pounds to a frame that was already overweight. Doc got pissed, and then you just laid down in the playoffs. Your mentally soft, and you talk in the third person, I am so done with you. Bye Glen Davis go to the Raptors and lets never hear of you again.
Red Sox @ Phillies Preview

Well, this series has gone bad so far, and it doesn't get any easier tonight with Lester taking on Hamels. Hamels is 3-0 with a 1.71 ERA with 21 strikeouts in three starts against Boston, and 5-2 with a 1.85 ERA in his last eight outings. I have always liked Hamels and am actually happy he is having such a great year.
Lester is 1-0 with a 0.64 ERA in two starts against the Phillies, but has lost two straight. I believe Lester will have a strong game tonight, but I am worried about the Sox being able to score any runs. I would hate to see them fall anymore behind the Yankees, and my hope is Gonzalez, Youk, Pedroia just have enough to get them through this game.
Red Sox win 3-1

Do You Remember the 90's?

The biggest moments for a Boston sports fan in the 90's look pretty lame now: Raymond Bourque hoisting the Cup in the red, white, and blue of the Avalanche. The Red Sox winning one playoff series against the Indians. A Super Bowl appearance dominated by a kick returner. Of all four teams, the Bruins had the best decade. That alone speaks volumes.
I'm only 26, but I did survive the 90's as a Boston fan. We haven't known only success here. We suffered too. And that just makes basking in this glorious time so much more enjoyable. And to fans from other cities (Philadelphia, I'm looking in your direction) who envy our success and think we're spoiled, all I can say is that we went through some tough times before this run, so we're going to enjoy it, bitches.
Let's just compare the 1990s to the 2000s team-by-team, and in four important categories: championships, championship appearances, playoff appearances, and playoff rounds won.
CHAMPIONSHIPS:
1990s | 2000s | |
Red Sox | 0 | 2 |
Patriots | 0 | 3 |
Celtics | 0 | 1 |
Bruins | 0 | 1 |
TOTAL: | 0 | 7 |
CHAMPIONSHIP APPEARANCES:
1990s | 2000s | |
Red Sox | 0 | 2 |
Patriots | 1 | 4 |
Celtics | 0 | 2 |
Bruins | 1 | 1 |
TOTAL: | 2 | 9 |
PLAYOFF APPEARANCES:
1990s | 2000s | |
Red Sox | 4 | 6 |
Patriots | 4 | 8 |
Celtics | 5 | 8 |
Bruins | 9 | 7 |
TOTAL: | 22 | 29 |
PLAYOFF ROUNDS WON:
1990s | 2000s | |
Red Sox | 1 | 8 |
Patriots | 3 | 14 |
Celtics | 2 | 12 |
Bruins | 9 | 6 |
TOTAL: | 15 | 40 |
Apart from the 7-0 disparity in titles, the most striking difference is the 40 playoff rounds won in the 2000s, compared to the 15 in the 90's. Boston teams did contend for playoff spots in the 90's, as demonstrated by their 22 appearances. But they didn't have enough to capture that postseason magic. Pedro didn't have Schilling, Pierce didn't have KG or Ray Allen. The Bruins didn't have Timmy Thomas.
Just compare the names from the 90's sports scene to the names from today. Pete Carroll vs. Bill Belichick. Rick Pitino vs. Doc Rivers. Mark Portugal vs. Jon Lester. Troy O'Leary vs. Manny Ramirez. Drew Bledsoe vs. Tom Brady.
And then there's the owners and GMs. Kraft takes over the Patriots, hires Pioli, three rings. The Yawkey trust sells the Sox, Epstein gets hired, curse over. Wyc Grousbeck and associates buy the Celtics and bring banners back to the Garden. Jeremy Jacobs still owns the Bruins, but they started spending just before the lockout. Then they hired Chiarelli in 2006.
So people who hate us obnoxious, arrogant, "entitled" Boston fans can go fuck themselves. We put up with Desmond Howard, with the Yankees winning 4 World Series in 5 years, with the choking Bruins, and what we all thought was the end of the Celtics' dynasty. We had to listen to Pete Carroll talk about "having fun" and Rick Pitino rant about the "negativity in this town." We had to endure Jimy Williams' nonsensical lineups. We had to watch an endless parade of mediocre athletes don our teams' uniforms then disappear into obscurity: Jose Offerman, Dino Radja, Jim Carey, Sedrick Shaw, I could go on forever.
We've earned the right to be happy, and to rub it in your faces.

Jeter To Return Monday

Word is Jeter just through a full practice, and was able to run around the bases 100% without any problem. The goal is to have him playing minor league games this weekend and be back with the Yankees as early as Monday. Jeter is just 6 hits short of the 3,000 hit marker and I am sure Yankee fans are just drooling over that, but you have to wonder if the Yankees have been playing ball better without him around. The Yankees have gone 8-2 in their last 10 games. Nunez is good in the field and has much better range, but I still think Jeter is the better player at this time.

Trail Blazers Still Haven't Learned

The Trail Blazers have offered former No. 1 draft pick Greg Oden an $8.8 million qualifying offer to stay in Portland. The offer means the often-injured 7-foot center becomes a restricted free agent. The Blazers can match any other offer made for him. For the Blazers sake I hope they don't match any offer, because Oden is never going to play a full season in the NBA. If you got him cheap, that's one thing, but the NBA has such a hard-on for big men that I bet some over spends. He is only 23 years old, but with microfracture surgery on both needs already you have to think his time on the court is going to be short. He has showed some promise when he has played averaging 9.4 points and 7.3 rebounds, but he looks like he is 50 years old and I just don't trust him at all.

Wild Thing Took Steroids

Actor Charlie Sheen tells Sports Illustrated in its latest issue that he took steroids "for like six or eight weeks" while filming the 1989 movie "Major League." He adds that the performance-enhancing drugs helped his fastball go from 79 mph to 85 mph.
Sad day to find out the Wild Thing was no different then all the other steroid users of the 80's/90's. Actually, I find this whole thing hilarious, because it is very unnecessary since he really never looked like the was throwing all that hard in the movie. If this is true it does show how steroids can improve performance. I think we all know that by now, but every once in a while you'll get some idiot that doesn't think it has much affect. Throw 6 MPH harder is a big deal, going from 92 to 98 is a big difference, but anyways steroids are hopefully gone for good.

Red Sox 1 Phillies 2

The Red Sox just aren't hitting right now. Last night Lackey was really their only offense... yea, that's the kind of game it was. This time it was Vance Worley who shut the Red Sox down going 7 innings allowing only 5 hits, 1 run, with 5 Ks. I have been making he excuse that the Red Sox really aren't going to be very good until they have Ortiz and Gonzalez in the lineup, well last night they did starting Gonzalez in RF and Ortiz at first and it still didn't make much of a difference. Maybe it's that Ortiz (0-4) was just out of sink after having to sit so much, or maybe it's just the Red Sox are once again in a funk. They have been an up and down team all year, so it could just be one of the down times.
What is lost in all this is how well Lackey pitched. He went 7 2/3 allowing 2 runs on 8 hits with 5 K's, much better then anything the Sox have been getting from him this year. There were rumors Lackey was going to need Tommy John, but after this performance and Francona and Lackey coming out saying that is false, I would say that it is unlikely.
Lackey was rolling until Ibanez homered to right in the 7th. Still, It's not Lackey's fault the Sox could put more then 1 run on the board. I think they will be fine, and they just need to get out of this NL schedule and back into Fenway. Still, being 2 1/2 games back of the Yankees already the Sox don't want to lose too much ground.

Shin Soo Choo Has Had A Rough Year

Indians outfielder Shin-Soo Choo could miss up to 2½ months after having surgery on his broken left thumb. ESPN
1st the guy gets a DUI, then he forgets how to hit, then breaks his thumb and is now out a billion weeks.
The Indians have slowed down significantly from their ridiculously hot start and now with losing presumably their best players, this only spells more trouble for the Tribe. Choo is a big part of their offense and even though he wasn't hitting that great he was still very aggressive on the base paths. I don't expect the Indians to be in it once he comes back so this won't do much, but is definitely the nail in the coffin.
I'm Sorry, I Just Don't Care
I don't care about women's soccer, it doesn't mean pride to me when it comes to Patriotism, it's stupid, irrelevant, sometimes cute, but a giant waste of time. On the 4th of July i'm not going to be on the esplanade thanking this team. Actually the only reason I'm writing this post is because I'm stuck and have NOTHING else to write about.
USA Boobs team beat North Korea's boobless team. That's what happened yesterday, no need to mention it, report about it on ESPN, bring up what happened a bunch of years back. No one cares about the Title IX of World Cups, accept for the relatives of the players themselves. Sure her name is Hope Solo and that's sweet and all, but you are an outspoken athlete on a sport that no one cares about.
This is a dumb post, fuck off, die.
Montreal Cops to Interrogate Chara

The involvement of police in this incident is one of the silliest sports stories of the year. While the circumstances around Pacioretty's injuries were unique, other big hits in the game weren't investigated by law enforcement officials. And there's a longstanding precedent in the sporting world, that what happens between the lines (or on the field, or within the boards) is governed differently. Fighting in hockey, for instance, doesn't result in arrests for disorderly conduct or assault.
It's a joke. And Canada is getting a reputation for whining and sour grapes. I love how passionate they are for the game, I was happy to see Winnipeg get a team, but look at the temper tantrum that Vancouver threw (again) after losing Game 7. And the uproar in Montreal after this hit. This Canadian crybabyism is preposterous.
I seriously doubt that Chara will be punished in any way. But just the fact that Montreal cops are spending their time looking into this is a massive joke.

Cliff Lee is pretty good, huh?
And like our buddy in Hotlanta sent us in a e-mail, thank god the Yankees don't have him.
That's all you can say after Cliff Lee went up against the best lineup in baseball and made them look like a High School team. Lee didn't give up a hit until the sixth to Marco Scutaro. The Sox were completely over matched and this was for his 3rd straight shut out. And on top of it he got an RBI hit, literally beating the Sox by himself. He ends the month of June, going 5-0 while allowing only a single earned run in 42 innings (0.21 ERA).
As from Josh Beckett, he was obviously rusty after the 13 day lay off. giving up 5 runs in 6 innings.
Oh well. Philly is still an awful place.

CDC urges pregnant women to get whooping cough vaccine
CDC- Pregnant women should be vaccinated against the whooping cough, an advisory panel for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Wednesday. It recommended that the vaccination be given in the late second or third trimester.
The endorsement was a change from the panel's previous recommendation to wait until immediately after women give birth.
In addition, the panel also recommended that teens and adults in close contact with newborns receive a single dose of the vaccine if they had not received it previously, in order to form a "cocoon" of immunity to protect newborns until they're old enough to be fully vaccinated themselves.
The panel also voted to recommend that a vaccine against meningitis, which is a life-threatening bacterial infection, be given to high-risk infants when they are only 9 months old.
The advantage to vaccinating pregnant women against whooping cough, which is also known as pertussis, is that they may pass the antibodies against the disease to the fetus so that it has some protection upon birth, said Dr. William Schaffner, a professor of preventive medicine at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. In addition, the woman would be protected for a longer period, Schaffner said.
Whooping cough Infants younger than 6 months are most at risk of dying from pertussis and receive vaccinations at the ages of 2, 4 and 6 months through the diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis (DtaP) series of shots. But some infants develop the condition before their shots.
Doctors want to "cocoon" infants by vaccinating the adults around them who might transmit the disease, Dr. Edgar Marcuse, professor of pediatrics at the University of Washington School of Medicine, said in an interview yesterday.
The recommendations won't help unless adults actually get their vaccinations, said Dr. Paul Offit, a pediatric infectious disease expert at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. In an outbreak last year of 10,000 cases in California, resulting in 10 infant deaths, only 6 percent of adults living with children were vaccinated, Offit said.
After reviewing evidence, the panel concluded the vaccine was safe to give during the later months of pregnancy. However, there was some concern that vaccinating mothers could interfere with how newborn babies respond to the vaccinations.
Pertussis is a bacterial infection of the respiratory tract that causes severe coughing, according to the National Network for Immunization Information. The coughing makes it difficult to breathe, and a "whooping" sound is sometimes heard when the child tries to breathe.
Passport Health carries the Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis vaccine nation-wide.

Red Sox @ Phillies Preview

One of the best pitching matchups you are going to get tonight as Beckett vs. Cliff Lee. Beckett has been out sick for over a week, but is finally feeling better and that's great news for the Red Sox, because he has flat out been their best pitcher this season (6-2 1.86 ERA).
Lee has thrown consecutive shutouts and hasn't allowed a run in 23 innings, but he has struggled against the Red Sox in his career going 2-4 with a 4.06 ERA. Still, with Ortiz most likely out of the lineup tonight he will most likely be tough to score on. Beckett on the other hand has has some success against the Phillies (8-4 3.98 ERA).
The Sox haven't been hitting as well since they have had to start playing NL teams on the road. It's not hard to figure out why. With Ortiz not being able to play much, Crawford out hurt, and everyone in the OF (with the exception of Ellsbury) sucking there just isn't much offense. That could really hurt the Sox tonight, but the Phillies aren't a great offensive team anymore either. I think Boston gets just enough, since they have stepped up against good pitching all year.

Ron Artest Taking His Talents To Finland?

Ton of rumors flying around the internet today that Ron Artest is heading to Finland today, and may decide to stay there. This is a very odd story since Artest has 3 years left on his contract with the Lakers. From the Lakers standpoint they have to be praying he goes. He is not worth the money he is getting and his production really fell off last year. Plus, he is fucking crazy, and proved it once again as he is changing his name to Metta World Peace.
Like I said I am perplexed by this story, but then again Ron Artest usually do that to me.

Penguins To Sign Jagr

There have been rumors for weeks that Jaromir Jagr is finally going to make his comeback to the NHL. There had been a bunch of teams rumored (Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, ect), but it's the Penguins that have seemed to have won the race. Jagr is now 38 years old and hasn't played in the NHL since 2008. He has been playing well overseas, and I do expect him to be able to put up 20-25 goals, so as long as your expectations are in the right place I don't this he will disappoint. I have never liked Jagr, maybe it's his hair, or maybe it's just my hatred for the Peguins, but I hope this woks out terrible.

Roethlisberger's Foot Still A Problem?

Ben Roethlisberger recently made comments that he may need foot surgery, and there has been an uproar from fans, because of it. It seem they are backing off those comments today...
"There's nothing new there," Tollner (Roethlisberger's agent) said. "The doctors elected not to do surgery and to let it heal. If it ever got worse, they might have to do something. Ben is kind of surprised that it's getting the attention. He hopes and expects never to have surgery on it. The foot was feeling better after the season, with the extra time this offseason, it's feeling great."
It sounds like Big Ben will be good to go, but the fact that surgery is still being discussed has to be a little concerning. I think they are going to have to wait till they get him in some serious practices and see how that foot reacts. The good news is that it doesn't sound like the foot has got any worse.

Joe Mauer to 1st, Rut Roh

The Twins signed the Minnesota Kid for a 8 year, bazillion dollar deal last year. They did it with the thoughts he would be the Twins starting catcher for the next 8 years, however, after tired legs and whatever injury he just returned from, Mauer is now taking balls at 1st base. The best thing about Mauer is that he had great production from a relatively weak offensive position. Now that he is moving to 1st the writing is on the wall that he won't be a catcher for his whole career. Also, that makes his value go down a lot if he eventually moves there permanently.
I want to give Mauer the benefit of doubt and say he will go back to being himself, however I have a bad feeling.
Celtics Make Qualifying Offer To Jeff Green

BRIGHTON -- Celtics president Danny Ainge said today the club will make a qualifying contract offer to Jeff Green, meaning it will have the right to match any offer made to the restricted free agent. Boston.com
Jeff Green didn't impress anyone last year, he under performed, looked lost, and showed flashes every once in a while.
I like Jeff, I liked the defense he played on LeBron and in the playoffs, but he needs to find his offensive rhythm. The reason we traded for him is because we needed offense, and with a full training camp under his belt he could be the player he was in Oklahoma City. I think he will be a big factor this year when it comes to the Celtics and I think averaging 14-15 ppg isn't completely out of the question.

DELAWARE, Ohio — A woman faces several charges after she allegedly sprayed deputies with breast milk as they tried to detain her over the weekend.
"When deputies attempted to remove Robinette from the vehicle, she advised the deputies that she was a breast feeding mother and proceeded to remove her right breast from her dress and began spraying deputies and the vehicle with her breast milk," Davis said. www.10tv.com
Well, the only surprising thing about this story is that she wasn't from that shit city Philadelphia. But how ridiculous of a reaction is this, and I didn't even know that this was possible. I mean you can chalk this up as another reason why tits are awesome, they are not only fun but can act as a milk squirt gun at any time. I don't know what my reaction would be if I were one of the officers, it was probably bitter sweet, at first they were probably thinking this is awesome they see a boob and then the next thing you know you get a breast milk bath from this crazy lady.
Surprise, Surprise, Philly Wants To Be Us

Philly.com - If there’s a reason to end interleague play, this is it. The next few days figure to test our collective patience and sanity. Brace yourself: Boston fans are coming. They’ve gotten out of control, these Boston fans. They’ve mutated. There was a time when they took a perverse pride in their suffering, when they romanticized their lack of sports luck. Then the Pats won and the Sox won and the Celtics won and, more recently, the Bruins won. The people in Boston have become obnoxious, arrogant, condescending. After the Bruins won the Stanley Cup, I asked my buddy Flan, who lives up there, whether people were rioting in Central Square – a particularly lawless area of Cambridge where Flan and I once watched two hobos fight in the middle of Massachusetts Avenue. (True story.)”Nope,” Flan said. “We act like we’ve been there before.” Boston Globe and SportsIllustrated.com columnist Dan Shaughnessy – a man who’s written about Boston sports for decades – summed up the vomit-inducing situation perfectly in the first sentence of a recent piece. The story appeared under the obligatory headline you might expect: “Being a sports fan in Boston has become an embarrassment of riches.” “The rest of the country,” Shaughnessy wrote, “must be sick of us in Boston.” Pass the Pepto.
It's so obvious that Philly is the little brother to the best sports town in America, so obviously this guy would come out with a extremely jealous article pointing fingers at fans from Titletown. I have been saying this for a while recently, Philadelphia is a city full of scumbags and they deserve another ringless run. I was happy for the city when they won, now they are trying to play the us against the world card which actually goes to show how actually pathetic they are.
How dare this guy go after our fans, when they have some of the most classless people in America representing their city. They embrace booing little kids, injured players and throwing up on little girls. Maybe they are just upset because their city is a step above New Orleans after the hurricane hit. Honestly have you ever been there? There are 2 cool streets, steak and cheese subs and then a bunch of ugly women. So calm down Philly and embrace the role of the little sister because that's all you'll ever be.
Oh yea Flyers, smooth move, trading 2 of your best players for a ehhh goalie isn't winning you the cup any time soon.

Rangers Going After K-Rod/Beltran?

According to sources the Texas Rangers are interested in Mets veterans Carlos Beltran and Francisco Rodriguez. Beltran to me makes sense. He can play CF, and would add just another solid bat in an already potent lineup. K-Rod though is on borrowed time, and is only a couple more appearances from kicking in his 2012 option which is worth $17.5MM. Obviously, in a deal for either the Mets would need to eat a lot of money, but to me trading for Beltran just makes a lot more sense. He is having a decent year (.278 BA, 10 HRs, 49 RBIs), while K-Rod has an ERA over 11.00 through the month of June. We have been hearing for years that his velocity had been dropping, and that might finally be catching up to him.

Dodgers File For Bankruptcy

"The Los Angeles Dodgers filed for bankruptcy protection in a Delaware court Monday, blaming Major League Baseball for refusing to approve a multibillion-dollar TV deal that owner Frank McCourt was counting on to keep the troubled team afloat.
The Chapter 11 financing permits the Dodgers to use $150 million for daily operations and buys time for the team to seek a media deal and ensure the team's long-term financial stability, the Dodgers said in a news release. A judge would need to approve use of the money and a hearing is set for Tuesday (Sportsline)."
This is the first step in McCourt trying to fight the MLB and keep his team. I don't think in the long run he will be able to hold on, especially if half the expenses that were rumored before are true. I wish they would just let a good owner come in, but with the way this is going it's going to take years to straighten it all out. What also makes it tough is that there are a ton of companies involved (one owns parking lot, ect). It's just a mess, and it's sucks for LA fans, because until this is all fixed they are going to be terrible.

Meet The Newest Bruin

The Bruins drafted Dougie Hamilton with their first pick in the NHL draft. Yea, I have no idea who is either, but I did do some reading up on him, and what the Bruins were thinking. Basically they like this kid because he is a huge (6-4) physical defenseman. If groomed right he could be another great defenseman for the Bruins. We saw in the finals what big defenseman can do for you. They can wear stars down, and if this kid is the real deal it would be nice to have him and Chara on the same team. The one knock on him right now is inconsistency, he can go out and play great then make some bad plays within the same game. To me that sounds like any 18 year old, so I wouldn't worry about that too much.

Owens Career Over?

Terrell Owens has undergone surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in one of his knees following a previously undisclosed injury this offseason. Owens has not confirmed the surgery, but sources say he had it within the last month. The prediction is that it will take about 6 months for him to get back on the field, so he probably wouldn't be ready to go till December. If that's the case you have to wonder if anyone will have interest. He is coming off a great year, but teams usually shy away from Owens, because he is a head case. Now you can add injury, to him being old and crazy. It will be very interesting to see if we ever see Owens in the NFL again.

The Wolves had a pretty good draft, they didn't draft a pg and picked up Derrick Williams. 2 things that were really good, however, in the second round the Wolves were able to pull off a draft ineligible move. They traded with Portland to get their pick and decided to take Tanguy NGOMBO who has been playing overseas. BUT he ended up being ineligible for the draft as he is 26 years old/ 27 next month.
I know he had a fake ID, but you would think more teams would do a little bit more scouting now a days. I don't know what the penalty will be by the league or if they are going to turn their heads because it's a late 2nd round pick and who cares, but I just can't believe the lack of research done by the Wolves.
Kentucky Extends Coach Cal

Kentucky will announce a two-year contract extension for men's basketball coach John Calipari Monday morning, giving him eight more years with the Wildcats, multiple sources told ESPN.com Sunday night.
Calipari's previous contract was $31.65 million for eight years. The new deal is expected to have a financial increase over his original contract.ESPN
Good, Coach Cal is one of the best coaches in college basketball if not the best. He is constantly having to juggle the players that come in and go every year. Last year he lost Brandon Knight, Josh Harrelson and DeAndre Liggins. But it's no big deal as he has Terrence Jones and Darius Miller return back to Lexington along with the best recruiting class in the country headlined by Anthony Davis, Michael Gilchrist and Marquis Teague.
Cal gets a lot of shit because of the revolving door policy he has and because everywhere he goes, trouble follows. However, in his defense he has never been found guilty of any issues that have happened.
Celtics Draft Recap

The risk I take when I can't write like I did last Friday is that the Captain and his anti basketball policy is a little ridiculous, so of course he would leave out the NBA DRAFT/ CELTICS DRAFT recap or thoughts, so although it's a little old news at this point here it goes.
The Celtics had a talent fall into their laps at 25 in Providences Marshon Brooks. Brooks is a SG/SF that can score in bunches and he shoots from everywhere and doesn't play much defense. So when the Celtics grabbed him I thought this was a real good pick, then they immediately traded him to the New Jersey Nets for their 27th pick and next years 2nd round pick. With the 27th pick they picked up the JaJuan Johnson, the 6'10 PF from Purdue. and the more and more I thought about it, the more and more this pick was the best fit. He averaged 20 points, 8 boards and shot 80% from the line last year and also was a 1st team all american and won Big 10 defensive player of the year. He is what we have been talking about when referring how to inject life into the Celtics, long, athletic and can play above the rim, also him being a 4 year senior means he can be effective this year.
They also picked up E'Twuan Moore (sweet name) with their second pick, also from Purdue and is a "do everything" guard. But I won't get too happy about that pick as I often do and then they are nothing but D League players.
But back to Johnson, with Glen Davis likely gone, this guy will be an improvement over him. Danny found a good need player in the draft, Chad Ford gave them a A- so I guess that has to mean something.

4 Sox, 2 Pirates

At least we didn't get swept by the Pirates. After dropping the 1st 2 games in the series the Sox were able to take the final game in Pittsburgh.
Adrian Gonzalez was again able to do no wrong as he went 2 for 3 and had two walks. It's his a millionth multi hit game in a row I think.
JD Drew left the game with an apparent eye injury, I hope the Sox put him on the DL forever. Also, with the way Drew is playing (4 hrs, .233 batting average, .328 OBP) I think it's time we waive him, and also while we are at it we should waive Mike Camron and Darnell McDonald. They have all been playing awful and since they are all in their last year of their contracts, whatever.
Andrew Miller had another decent outing giving up 5 hits and 2 walks while striking out 4 Pirates in 6 IP. If Miller continues pitching well, this could be a huge pick up for the Sox.
We have today off before going to Philly.

Technology is my friend.....
This fall will be my 15th year to coach football. I have had a good run here in Denison and professionally I have come a long way. I would have to say that technology is the #1 factor in me improving as a ball coach. However, that is sort of a trick answer. Here are some of the technology tools I am talking about in no particular order.
1. HUDL
2. DVD duplicator
3. coachhuey.com
4. blogspot
5. camtasia
6. snapit
7. webinars
List could go on and on. The reason I say its a trick answer is this. All of those technological tools lead back to relationships with people. Having the ability to communicate with other coaches ANYWHERE and having the ability to functionally exchange thoughts and ideas have changed me as a coach.
Greg Wright came to Denison in the fall of 2007. He brought with him about 10 dvds that he let me watch. Among them was the Gus Malzahn coaches choice set. This was right about the time Gus had left the HS ranks and went to Arkansas as the OC. I asked Greg where he got them at and he told me that he got them from a guy in Wisconsin. He told me that he traded a couple of things he had and sent him some game cut ups and before he knew it he had dvds laying around all over the place. Relationships....
I then became a member on coachhuey.com. My member handle is bigballsincowtown. I couldn't tell you why. I tried a couple of normal names and they were already taken, so there it is. Here is where I met Brophy. As you all know, my man Brophy is as sharp as they come in this business. His knowledge level about the game is on another level. Reading his posts on huey.com (and later this blog) have made me a better offensive coach. Seeing things thru the eyes of a defender, specifically Cajun eyes that will hold nothing back, helps me daily strive to get to his level. Relationships....
So from Texas to Wisconsin and on to Louisiana, I became hooked. It was like swapping baseball cards when I was a kid. The Gus stuff got me going and carried me up to close to 200 dvds. Then I hit another gold mine. My boss had 6 hours of Rich Rodriguez talking ball to his former staff, when Rich Rod was at Clemson. This was the spring after his offense took of with Woody Dantlzer as his qb. It started with the beginnings and took off from there. I transferred those from vhs to dvd, put em on huey.com, and they took off like firecrackers on the 4th of July. Relationships....
I still swap, but not like I did. I am at 1200 dvds now and I am always looking to add to my collection. If you are interested, lets start building a relationship and get on the Brophsters level!!! The quest for knowledge in any profession is what its about.

Bruins' Schedule Released

The big date that stands out is January 7th, when the Canucks come to town. The Bruins will not travel to Vancouver.
Canadien games:
Thursday 10/27 in Boston
Saturday 10/29 in Montreal
Monday 11/21 in Montreal
Monday 12/19 in Boston
Thursday 1/12 in Boston
Wednesday 2/15 in Montreal
The Detroit Red Wings come to town on November 25th in the Black Friday matinee.
The Bruins will host the Flyers on St. Patrick's Day (Saturday March 17) in what will probably be the drunkest game of the year, despite the 1:00pm start time.
The Bruins make their first trip to Winnipeg on Tuesday December 6th.
Phil Kessel and the Maple Leafs will come to town on October 20th, December 3rd, and March 19th.
The regular season will end Saturday April 7th when the B's host the Sabres.

I Hate NL Baseball

I don't get why the NL doesn't catch up to the AL and implement a DH. I don't get people who defend pitchers hitting. Sure DHs can be fat, lethargic, and even unathletic. But is watching them hit a single less entertaining than watching a pitcher whiff on an 88 MPH fastball?
What's the appeal of pitchers hitting? Strategy? If I wanted to see strategy, I'd watch a Risk tournament.
And what's wrong with adding more offense? Is the biggest part of All-Star weekend the Bunt Derby or the Home Run Derby?
And what about investing millions of dollars in a pitcher, then risking their arms at the plate and their legs on the basepaths.
Pitchers hitting is antiquated and boring. Other sports have special sets of rules for special positions. In hockey, for instance, if a goalie commits a penalty, he DOESN'T go to the penalty box. Someone goes in his place.
It's just stupid to have two sets of rules for two halves of baseball. It's stupid to have guys who are paid to pitch, train to pitch, and spend their entire lives pitching to have to stand up at the plate and bad .115.

Flyers Trade Carter and Richards, Acquire Bryzgalov
The Flyers then signed Russian goalie Bryzgalov to a 9 year, $51 million deal. The Flyers were 11th in goals allowed last year, and used three different goalies in the playoffs, never being able to settle on a true #1. Bryzgalov is a solid, 31 year old goalie and answers Philadelphia's biggest question going into the 2011-12 season.
But I think the size of the deal is a bit much for just a solid goalie like Bryzgalov. He's capable of brilliance, he recorded 7 shutouts this year. And he doesn't have Luongonian style meltdowns. But he's just not that great. Not for a $51 million commitment, at least.
The Flyers need a goalie, so I understand. It is funny, though. After last season, everyone thought that goaltending was an overrated commodity. The Cup winning goalie - Antti Niemi - got a 4 year, $15.2 million deal after the Blackhawks won it all last year. People thought that so long as your goalie wasn't a liability, and stopped the standard shots, then it didn't matter who he was. How things change.
I wonder if Tim Thomas will get a commission from Bryzgalov's deal.
